Know What You are Paying For

Not only should all of the costs in a snow removal contract be identified, but a detailing of the payment term options should be provided. The bottom line is to make sure you know what you are paying for. The contract should identify under what conditions services will be provided, what equipment will be used, and its purpose. This is important so that you don’t end up paying extra for services not included in the initial contract.

The contract should be easily understood and not be written in industry jargon. The use of confusing jargon is a sign that the company doesn’t want you to know that particular detail and may be looking for a way to hide those details that can allow them to add costs after the fact.

Ask for proof of insurance. Make sure an injury claim is the responsibility of the snow removal company. If they have no liability insurance or can’t pay a claim, you’ll be next on the hook. A contractor should be covered for at least $5 million in general liability insurance and WSIB coverage and provide clearance certificates for all workers. An agreement that does not include proof of liability insurance or WSIB coverage is inadequate, and you should not proceed with that company.
